Massage Therapy

What’s the difference between a “Masseuse” and a “Registered Massage Therapist”?

A masseuse is a body-worker who has perhaps taken courses in massage techniques. There are many local colleges and aesthetics schools that teach different varieties of massage.

A “Registered” Massage Therapist (R.M.T) has a minimum of 3000 post secondary hours of education in the science and art of massage therapy. Registered massage therapists are part of the Health Professions Act in British Columbia and therefore are a self-governing, self-regulating profession who have to have a minimum number of yearly “continuing education” credit hours to maintain their license and have liability insurance.

Registered Massage Therapists are covered by extended medical plans, (some require a prescription from a GP), and all Massage Therapists at Westgate Wellness Centre are required to have the “RMT” designation and licensing.

Massage Therapy increases blood flow, and helps dissolve muscular adhesions that form with repetitive motions and in the stresses of everyday life. Massage Therapy can be used alone or in combination with any or all of the other services provided at Westgate.
